A short story by Sōseki Natsume
“I had a dream like this. I was carrying a child on my back — a boy of about six. He was certainly my own child. But strangely enough, at some point his eyes had gone blind, and his head was shaved like a little monk’s. “When did you lose your sight?” I asked. “Oh, long ago,” he answered. The voice was that of a child, yet the manner of speaking was entirely that of an adult — equal, composed. On both sides of the narrow path stretched green rice fields. From time to time, the shadow of an egret crossed the darkness. “We’ve reached the rice fields,” the child said from my back. “How do you know?” I asked, turning my face toward him. “Because the egrets are calling,” he replied.”
