A short story by Sōseki Natsume

“It was said that Unkei was carving the guardian deities at the gate of Gokoku-ji Temple, so I went there for a walk to have a look. When I arrived, a crowd had already gathered before me, busily offering their opinions and speculations. About five or six ken in front of the temple gate stood a great red pine. Its trunk slanted upward, partly concealing the tiled roof of the gate, and then stretched far into the blue sky. The green of the pine and the vermilion of the gate reflected each other beautifully. Moreover, the tree’s position was perfect — cut at an angle so as not to block the left edge of the gate, spreading wider toward the top, its branches thrusting out just to the roofline. The effect was somehow antique, reminiscent of the Kamakura period.”
