A short story by Sōseki Natsume
“I was on a large ship. This ship cut through the waves, day and night, constantly emitting a thin trail of black smoke. The sound was tremendous. Yet I had no idea where we were heading. From beneath the waves, the sun rose like a blazing fire poker. It climbed up until it hovered above the tall mast for a while, then, before I knew it, overtook the ship and moved on ahead. Finally, with a sizzling flash like a fire poker, it sank back into the depths of the waves. Each time, the blue waves boiled far away into the color of sappanwood. Then the ship let out a deafening roar, chasing after the sun—but it could never catch up.”
