A short story by Sōseki Natsume
“The world seemed to begin stirring uneasily. It felt as if war could break out at any moment. Naked, frightened horses, driven from their pastures, ran amok day and night around the mansion, and I felt as if foot soldiers were swarming after them endlessly. Yet inside the house, all was calm and silent like a forest. In the house were a young mother and a child of three. The father had gone somewhere. He had left in the middle of the night, when the moon had not yet risen. On the floor, he wore straw sandals and a black hood.”
