A short story by Sōseki Natsume
“In the middle of a wide earthen floor stood something like a summer platform for cool evenings. Around it were arranged several small stools. The platform shone with a deep black polish. In one corner, an old man sat alone before a square tray, drinking sake. His side dish seemed to be simmered vegetables. His face was flushed from the drink, and it glowed with a soft, healthy sheen—there was hardly a wrinkle to be seen. Only his long, full white beard revealed that he was indeed an old man. Though I was only a child, I remember wondering how old that man could be. Just then, the housewife came in from the back, carrying a pail of water drawn from the bamboo pipe.”
