A short story by Kōji Uno
“Near the savage lands of Taiwan, at the foot of a certain mountain, there was a small village with no more than twenty households. On the outskirts of this village lived an honest and well-respected couple with their beloved three-year-old daughter, Ochiyo. The three of them lived harmoniously in their humble home. Counting back, it was exactly fifteen years ago, at the beginning of winter. Even in Taiwan, which is often thought to be hot year-round, the end of November in such a mountain village meant that even the sounds of insects grew fainter with each passing day, and the nights became eerily desolate.”
