A short story by Sōseki Natsume

“On the seventh night after Shōtarō had been carried off by a woman, he wandered back home. Suddenly he came down with a fever and collapsed into bed, or so Kensan came to inform me. Shōtarō was the handsomest young man in the neighborhood, and an extremely good and honest fellow. He had only one indulgence: wearing a Panama hat, he would sit in the evening at the front of the fruit shop and watch the faces of women passing by. He was endlessly fascinated by them. Aside from this, he had no remarkable traits. When few women passed, he would gaze at the fruit instead of the street. The fruit included a variety of things: peaches, apples, loquats, and so on.”
