A short story by Sōseki Natsume

“I had a dream like this. Sitting by her pillow with my arms folded, I saw a woman lying on her back. In a quiet voice, she said, “I am going to die.” She had laid her long hair upon the pillow, and rested her softly contoured, oval face upon it. Beneath her perfectly white cheeks, a warm tint of blood shone just enough, and her lips, of course, were red. She did not look as if she were about to die at all. Yet in that calm voice, she clearly said, “I am going to die.” I thought to myself, surely this is death. So I leaned over and looked down at her, asking, “Is that so? Are you really going to die?” “Yes, I am,” she said—and opened her eyes wide.”
