A short story by Osamu Dazai

“The more I speak, the less people believe me. Everyone I meet, everyone I encounter, treats me with suspicion. Even when I visit, longing just to see someone’s face, they greet me with a look that seems to ask, ‘What are you here for?’ It is unbearable. I no longer wish to go anywhere. Even when I go to the nearby bathhouse, I always make sure to choose a time just before dusk. I don’t want anyone to see my face. In the summer, even so, in the fading light of evening, I feel that my yukata, glowing white in the darkness, stands out terribly, and I am so bewildered, I feel as though I might die from the discomfort.”
