A short story by Atsushi Nakajima
“Li Zhang of Longxi was a man of great learning and talent. In the late years of the Tang dynasty’s Tianbao era, he was young but already listed among the top scholars, and was later appointed as the governor of Jiangnan. However, he was naturally stubborn and extremely self-reliant, and he despised the idea of serving as a low-ranking official. Not long after, he resigned from his post and returned to his hometown, Guo Lue, where he secluded himself, severing connections with others and dedicating himself entirely to poetry. Rather than remain a minor official and bend before corrupt high-ranking officials, he chose to leave behind a name as a poet that would be remembered even a hundred years after his death. However, his literary fame did not rise easily, and his life gradually became more difficult with each passing day. Li Zhang eventually became increasingly anxious and restless.”
