中島 敦
明治42年(1909) – 昭和17年(1942)
東京四谷生まれ。東京帝大国文科卒。漢学者の家系で育ち、横浜高女の教師のかたわら創作を重ねる。教師を辞職し、南洋庁の教科書編修書記としてパラオに赴任中、昭和17(1942)年、『文學界』に「山月記」「文字禍」を発表。同年『光と風と夢』が芥川賞候補になる。帰国後、執筆に専念するも持病の喘息の悪化のため33歳で急逝。『名人伝』 『弟子』 『李陵』『マリヤン』など。
Atsushi Nakajima
1909 – 1942
Born in Yotsuya, Tokyo. Graduated from the Faculty of Literature at the University of Tokyo. Raised in a family of classical Chinese scholars, he worked as a teacher at Yokohama Women’s High School while also pursuing creative writing. After resigning from teaching, he was assigned to Palau as a textbook editor for the South Seas Bureau. In 1942, he published “Sangetsuki“(”The Moon Over the Mountain”)and Moji-ka (“The Whirlpool of Characters”) in the magazine Bungakukai. In the same year, his work Hikari to Kaze to Yume(”Light, Wind and Dreams”) was nominated for the Akutagawa Prize. After returning to Japan, he focused solely on writing, but his chronic asthma worsened, and he passed away suddenly at the age of 33. His notable works include Meijin-den(”The Legend of Master”), Deshi(”The Disciple”), Riryo, and Mariyan.
