ABOUT THE AUTHOR
1909 – 1948
Born in Kitatsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture. His real name was Shūji Tsushima. From his middle school years, he published his early works in doujinshi (literary magazines). In 1935, his work Gyakkō (Against the Current) was nominated for the first Akutagawa Prize. The following year, he published his first short story collection, Bannen (The Final Years). He went on to write numerous works, including Fugaku Hyakkei (One hundred views of Mount Fuji), Tsugaru, Viyon no Tsuma (Villon’s Wife), and Ningen Shikkaku (No Longer Human).
