“Excuse me, but…” said a smooth, urban-sounding man’s voice. She stopped, looking awkward, as if a mix of timidity and suspicion had taken over her. The hilltop was bathed in a magnificent red sunset. Sparse trees cast long, thin shadows on the horse-like ground. “What a beautiful view, really… What kind of tree is this?” The man asked, pointing at a tree with flame-like green leaves that only grew in this region, speaking in an overly familiar tone.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

1930 – 1965

Born in Tokyo, his real name was Yoshimi. He dropped out of the graduate school at Keio University. He co-revived the third edition of Mita Bungaku with Hideo Takubo and Yoshihisa Katsura, and serialized Hibi no Shi (“Daily Death”) in the magazine.
In 1958, he published Engi no Hate(”End of the Act”), Sono Ichinen(”That One Year”), Kinin(”Return to Post”), and Umi no kokuhatsu(The Sea’s Accusation) in Bungakukai. He also made his mark in the short-short genre, with Omamori(”Charm”)being featured in overseas magazines.
He gained recognition with works like Kaigan Kōen (“Seaside Park”) and The Christmas Gift, but tragically died in a traffic accident in 1965. After his death, works such as Ai no Gotoku(”Like Love”) were published.
