夏目 漱石
慶応3年(1867) – 大正5年(1916)
江戸牛込馬場下(現、東京都新宿区喜久井町)生まれ。本名、金之助。帝国大学英文科卒業後、松山中学、第五高校で英語教師を経て、英国に留学。帰国後、東大講師となる。明治38年(1905)、『吾輩は猫である』で文壇に登場。『坊つちやん』『草枕』『三四郎』『それから』『門』『彼岸過迄』『行人』『こゝろ』『道草』『明暗』等、多くの傑作を執筆。近代日本を代表する文学者。
Sōseki Natsume
1867 – 1916
Born in Babashita, Ushigome, Edo (present-day Kikui-chō, Shinjuku, Tokyo). His real name was Kinnosuke. After graduating from the Department of English Literature at the Imperial University, he taught English at Matsuyama Middle School and the Fifth High School before studying in Britain. Upon his return to Japan, he became a lecturer at Tokyo Imperial University. In 1905, he made his literary debut with I Am a Cat. He went on to write many masterpieces, including Botchan, Kusamakura, Sanshirō, Sorekara (And Then), Mon (The Gate), Higan sugi made, Kōjin (The Wayfarer), Kokoro, Michikusa, and Meian (Light and Darkness). He is regarded as one of the foremost literary figures of modern Japan.
