樋口 一葉
明治5年(1872) – 明治29年(1896)
東京生まれ。本名は奈津。明治19年(1886)、中島歌子の歌塾「萩の舎(はぎのや)」に入門。父の死後は家計を支えるため、明治24年(1891)に半井桃水に師事して小説家を志す。翌年に『うもれ木』を発表。以降、『大つごもり』『にごりえ』『十三夜』『たけくらべ』『わかれ道』などの名作を次々と世に送り出した。24歳の若さで亡くなったが、『一葉日記』も刊行され、文学的功績は今日まで高く評価され続けている。
Ichiyō Higuchi
1872 – 1896
Born in Tokyo, her real name was Natsu. In 1886 (Meiji 19), she entered the poetry school “Hagi no Ya” run by Utako Nakajima. After her father’s death, she took on the responsibility of supporting her family and, in 1891 (Meiji 24), became a disciple of Momosuke Nakai, aspiring to become a novelist. The following year, she published Umoregi. She went on to produce a series of notable works, including Ōtsugomori, Nigoriié, Jūsan’ya, Takekurabe, and Wakaremichi. She died at the young age of 24, but Ichiyō Nikki was also published posthumously, and her literary achievements continue to be highly regarded to this day.
