A short story by Sōseki Natsume
“As I stepped over the threshold of the barber’s, three or four people dressed in white froze in place and, all at once, said, “Welcome.” Standing in the center and looking around, I saw it was a square room. Windows opened on two sides, and mirrors hung on the remaining two. Counting the mirrors, there were six in all. I moved to sit in front of one of them. As I did, the seat gave a soft, satisfying bounce. It was a chair very well made for comfort. In the mirror, my face appeared clearly. Behind my reflection, I could see the windows. Then, at a slant, I noticed the lattice of the reception counter. There was no one inside it. Outside the windows, I could see the upper halves of people passing along the street. Shōtarō walked by, accompanied by a woman.”
