A short story by Sōseki Natsume
“I had a dream like this. It seemed to take place in a very distant past, perhaps close to the age of the gods. By misfortune, I had led an army and suffered defeat. I was captured alive and brought before the enemy general. People of that time were all very tall, and all of them wore long beards. They had leather belts, from which hung swords as straight as sticks. Their bows looked as if they had been made from thick wisteria vines, unvarnished and unpolished. Everything appeared extremely simple and rustic. The enemy general grasped the middle of his bow with his right hand and pressed the bow down onto the grass.”
