ABOUT THE AUTHOR
1903 – 1967
Born in Yamanashi Prefecture, his real name was Satomu Shimizu. In his youth, he lived as an apprentice at the Yamamoto Shūgorō Shop in Kobikichō, Tokyo. In 1926, his story Near Suma Temple was published in Bungei Shunjū, becoming his breakthrough work. In 1943, his work Nihon Fudōki was nominated for the Naoki Prize, which he declined. He published numerous works, mainly historical and period novels, including The Fir Tree Remains, Red Beard Medical Tales, Aobeka Story, A Town Without Seasons, Sabu, and The Long Slope, characterized by sincere and warm portrayals of characters and richly developed narratives. Many of his works were also adapted for film and stage.
