A short story by Ryunosuke Akutagawa

“Ladies and gentlemen, I am now in Osaka, so let me tell you a story about Osaka. Once, there was a man who came to the city of Osaka to work as a servant. I do not know his real name; all that is known is that he came to work in the kitchen, so he is simply called Gonsuke. When Gonsuke passed through the gate of a recruiting agency, he said to the clerk, who was smoking a long pipe, “Sir, I wish to become an immortal. Please let me live and work in a place where I can achieve that.” The clerk was so astonished that he remained silent for a while. Gonsuke repeated, “Sir, did you hear me? I wish to become an immortal. Please let me live in a place where I can do so.”
