A short story by Osamu Dazai
“Melos was enraged. He vowed that he must, without fail, remove that wicked and tyrannical king. Melos knew nothing of politics. He was a shepherd from a village. He spent his days playing the flute and tending his sheep. Yet, he possessed an extraordinary sensitivity to evil. At dawn today, Melos departed from his village, crossed fields and mountains, and arrived in this city of Syracuse, ten ri away. Melos had neither father nor mother, nor a wife. He lived alone with his shy sixteen-year-old sister. This sister was soon to be married to an honest and steadfast shepherd from their village.“
